01 | New Bark Town - video

[ The video shows Rin and his new partner, a Carvanha. There’s some good news and some bad news regarding Rin’s current state of attire. One is that he managed to grab his team jacket before turning up in Johto, so he at least has something other than his swimsuit keeping him decent. The other is that, well. He doesn’t have a shirt on.

Which one of those is good and which is bad is, of course, completely subjective. ]

Is it common for people to show up here without anything decent to wear? Because I actually have no clothes besides what I'm wearing right now.

[ The joys of being a Swimmer class: he has literally no underwear. Or pants, for that matter. Or shoes, either. But he does have a nice new pair of legskins, so it's not... all bad? ]

And some other questions. Is there a decent-sized pool in any of the cities here?

[ There's a slight hesitation before he goes on. ]

And about training Pokémon. I read the handbook, so I get why we have to do it, but... How are you supposed to decide what kind of Pokémon to raise? Or what the best way to raise them is?

Yeah, it's out in Kanto, and you're right; most people head out to Cherrygrove. Heck, most people never make it past Goldenrod City.

[Or if they do, it's never for long. Goldenrod's become a central hub, for better or worse.]

I'd say they're missing out, though. There's a lot more to see just around the corner.

[New world, new adventures... ah well. Since he asked, he might as well shift gears a little.]

Anyway, the locals do it all the time. Gym Leaders tend to work with their favorite types on a regular basis, and I've even seen a few people here who work with a theme. Not really my style, but if you can make a single-type team work, then more power to you. It's tough work.

Well, if you're looking for the ocean, your best bet's Olivine City. It's a ways off from where you're at, but believe me, it's worth the wait. Plus, it's not like Goldenrod's got any water in the first place.

[Well, no water that's accessible. There might be some fenced off areas, but that's nothing like an ocean.]

Or, if you're feeling really adventurous, you could try going out to Cinnabar island. Place is kind of deserted, but I think everyone should check out the volcano at least once.

It's always a tough call. You take the ferry, and you wind up away from most of the crowd. You head down Route 29, and you're in for a long, dull trip towards Violet City.

[And Violet City also happens to be Riku's least favorite place ever for a huge plethora of reasons. His words carry a slightly irritated tone at the mere mention of its name.]

But as far as favorites go... tough call. Olivine, Cerulean, and Cinnabar are pretty high up there, but Kanto's big cities aren't too shabby, either. They're so huge that I end up finding new spots every time I drop by, and there's always something going on out there.

[Hmm, but let's see... other notable places.]

If you're not big on city life, Ecruteak's a lot quieter, plus it's got some of the best landmarks in Johto-- the Tin and Burned Towers.

[Plus, it's full of history and culture, something a bit more lacking in Kanto.]

Well, when you consider how you can store Pokémon inside of computers... yeah, I'd say it's pretty hi-tech. You just gotta look past the rural towns before it starts to show.

[And even then, it's only in small clusters until the big cities. Not like Violet's got much in the way of technical marvels.]

As far oceans, when you grow up on an island, you get used to the water. It's about as close to home as I'm ever gonna get in this place.
